Troubleshoot ad delivery issues with an "Update required" status

After you've created or edited an ad, there may be an issue that prevents the ad from being delivered. To check the status of your campaign, ad set or ad, look in the Delivery column in Ads Manager. The status Not delivering can appear for multiple reasons, whether the ad, ad set or ad campaign has been turned off or has finished its scheduled course of delivery.

However, if there is an issue preventing the ad from being delivered, the sub-status will read Update required. For example, Update required will appear if the ad contains an offer that has ended or the Page has been deleted. An error message will appear in Ads Manager explaining what went wrong.

To make your ad active again, you need to update the ad and fix the error:

  • Page post can't be used: You are using a post that can't be promoted in an ad. Choose a different Page post to continue.
  • Ad post is not available: The Facebook post associated with your ad is not available. It may have been removed, or you may not have permission to view it. Choose a different Page post or get permission.
  • Shared post can't be boosted: Shared posts can't be promoted. If you're the owner of the original post, boost it directly.
  • Offer has ended or expired: Your ad contains an offer that has ended or expired. Offers can't be updated. Create a new offer and ad in a different ad set to continue.
  • Page is unpublished for ad: The Page running the ad is unpublished. Publish the Page.
  • Event has ended: Your ad contains an event that has ended. Edit the event.
  • Missing product ID: The product being promoted is no longer in the catalogue or has an issue that prevents it from being displayed in your ads. For example, it may have a missing or invalid image, be rejected due to a policy violation, or be archived, out of stock or expired. Learn how to troubleshoot invalid items.
  • Product set is empty or Insufficient products in product set for collection: The product set you've selected for your ad doesn't contain any products or doesn't contain enough unique products that are available to display. Learn how to troubleshoot product set errors.

Once you've made the necessary update, you will have to manually toggle the ad set back to active.

Note: If you did not fix the issue and attempted to activate the ad, the ad may show as active but will reset to Update required again.
