How disclaimers work for ads about social issues, elections or politics

Ads about social issues, elections or politics may require a disclaimer, requirements vary by country. This disclaimer will appear on ads you run and might include information on the organisation or individual responsible for the ad.

A disclaimer should:

  • Accurately represent the name of the entity or person responsible for the ad.
  • Have accurate, valid information at all times.
  • Not include profanity, objectionable language or unrecognisable words or phrases.
  • Not include URLS or acronyms, unless URLs or acronyms make up the name of the organisation, which must also be accurately reflected on the website provided.
  • Not wrongfully imply that your ads are paid for by, with or on behalf of Facebook.
  • Not wrongfully imply that a foreign leader has paid for the ad.
  • Not include "Paid for by" language that duplicates the same language provided by Facebook.

How are you reviewing the disclaimers?

The name of the entity paying for the ad must be accurate, complete and truthful. The location of the disclaimer entity must match the targeting country set during the authorisation process and ad creation. We'll review any ads you create that include disclaimers against our Meta Advertising Standards, but you're responsible for making sure that you're legally eligible to run ads and that any ads you create comply with any applicable law.

My disclaimer was disapproved. What can I do?

We review all ads, including those with disclaimers and check that they adhere to our Advertising Standards. If your disclaimer is disapproved, you can either edit it or request another review.

What happens to existing ads if I edit my disclaimer?

If you edit your disclaimer, it'll go through our review process again and won't be immediately available to use. You won't be able to create new ads until the new disclaimer has been approved.

Will the disclaimer on my ad still be shown if someone shares it?

Yes. If someone sees and shares the ad, the shared version will still contain the disclaimer and available information about the ad.

What placements or formats don't support ads with a "Paid for by" disclaimer?

The following placements aren't available at this time: Messenger, WhatsApp, right-hand column, Marketplace, search, Facebook Stories, suggested videos, Watch Feed, Audience Network, in-stream reserve and in-stream video on desktop (In-stream video is only supported on iOS and Android). The only unsupported formats are dynamic product ads (DPA), boosted ambient live video and AR ads. All other ad formats are supported (including DCO).

How long does it take for disclaimers to be reviewed?

Disclaimers are reviewed within 24 hours.

I'm running an ad that references a political figure who isn't currently running for office. Do I need to run the ad with a disclaimer?

If that person is a current or former candidate for public office, yes. Ads that reference a current or former candidate for public office are required to be run with a disclaimer, and this includes people who aren't actively running for office.
