Create a video engagement custom audience

You can create an engagement custom audience based on people who watch your video on Facebook or Instagram. These include videos delivered to Feed, Stories and other eligible placements on Facebook and Instagram.

Note: Targeting options are limited for audiences that include people under the age of 18 in most countries, under 20 in Thailand and under 21 in Indonesia. Learn more about targeting options to reach teens and how this update may affect your ad sets.

How to create an engagement custom audience

If you create a video engagement audience from a video that is used in an existing post, the audience size will match the number of views from the post and not from the ad reach. However, if you use a video that you have uploaded for creating the ad, it will match the audience size with the ad reach.

When you create a video custom audience using videos from your campaign, consider that:

  • If the video file was uploaded during ad creation, the audience size will reflect the ad reach.
  • If you created the ad with a video from an existing post, the audience size from that video may not match the views shown on the ad reach, but may instead reflect the number of views on that post.

For example, you might notice during video custom audience creation that only 1,000 views are shown for a campaign that recorded over 200,000 views. The views are lower because the video from your ad was reused from a post. When you create a Video custom audience from a video previously used in a post, the audience is created from the 1,000 views and not the 200,000.

To create an engagement custom audience from video views:

  1. Go to your Audiences.
  2. Click the Create audience drop-down menu and select Custom audience.
Note: If you've never created an audience, you'll see a Create a custom audience button, not a drop-down menu. Click this button to create the audience.
  3. Click Video and then click Next.
  4. In the Engagement field, choose the type of content that you want to use to create your audience. For example, "People who viewed at least ten seconds of your video".
  5. Click Choose videos. Choose up to 200 videos.
  6. In the window that appears, open the drop-down menu and select Campaign, Page, Instagram professional account or Video ID.
    • Campaign: Use the search bar to find a campaign (active or inactive). Then, tick the boxes next to the video(s) that you want to use.
    • Page: Select a Facebook Page and tick the boxes next to the video(s) that you want to use.
    • Instagram professional account: Select an Instagram professional account and tick the boxes next to the video(s) that you want to use. You can choose multiple videos from multiple professional accounts for one audience.
    • Video ID: Enter the video IDs from your Page's video library and tick the boxes next to the video(s) that you want to add.
  7. Click Confirm.
  8. In the Retention field, enter the number of days that people will remain in your audience after they've engaged with your video(s). People are removed from your audience after the set time period unless they engage with the video(s) again.
For example, if you tell Facebook to go back 30 days and a person engaged 29 days ago, they'll be in your audience. However, if they fail to engage the next day, they'll be removed from the audience. Anyone new who engages within the time period you choose will be added to the audience. This means that the audience is constantly being refreshed, so you don't need to edit or create a new engagement custom audience unless you want to change the time period or the type of engagement.
  9. Add an audience name and description (optional).
  10. Click Create audience.

When you finish, we'll start building your engagement custom audience and notify you when it's ready. You can then use the audience when creating an ad. Learn more about using an engagement custom audience in targeting.

Note: You can't create new ad sets with audiences based on Facebook Pages that have been deleted, and you can't use those audiences in other campaigns. This includes engagement custom audiences, associated lookalike Audiences, special ad audiences or saved audiences that include an engagement custom audience.
