Why did I get charged twice for my Facebook ad?

If you're seeing multiple charges for your Facebook ad, here are a few things you can check to find out why. This article explains:

  1. Why you may see multiple charges of different amounts
  2. Why you may see multiple charges of the same amount
  3. How to view your ad charges and payment history
  4. How you're charged when you use an advertising coupon
  5. How to report a billing problem

Are you seeing multiple charges of different amounts?

This is most likely not an error, but the result of when we charge you for Facebook ads. There are two times when you pay for your ads:

  1. On your monthly bill date.
  2. When the amount that you've spent reaches your payment threshold.

The first case happens each month. The second case can happen multiple times a month or not at all. It depends on the amount that your payment threshold is set to and how much you're spending on ads.

As it's possible to reach your payment threshold and be charged on your bill date, you may receive multiple charges in a given month. This is also why you can be charged after you purchase ads or even after you've stopped running them.

Are you seeing multiple charges of the same amount?

It's likely that these charges are associated with clicks that your ads received on different days. It's possible that one of these charges was delayed through your bank, which is why you can see two of the same charges on the same day.

Have you checked your receipt in Ads Manager to find out where the charges came from?

It's easy to see a detailed history of what you've been billed for, down to the ads that charges relate to. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Billing section of your Ads Manager.
  2. Choose the date range that you'd like to see transactions for.
  3. Select the Transaction ID for the charge that you'd like more info about.
  4. From here, you can view the ads and details associated with each charge and see the reason why you were billed. You can even check the ad sets and ads to view their performance and better understand how the charges were accumulated.

If you're still unsure, see how ad billing works on Facebook.

Have you been charged even though you had a coupon?

Once you add a coupon to your account, it's charged once a day when you start running ads. If it runs out or expires and you keep running ads, your default payment method will be charged next. The situation may happen if your ad's budget was set higher than the value of your coupon.

Are you seeing overlapping dates on your invoices?

You are charged for the number of clicks or the number of impressions that your ad receives. These clicks or impressions on your ads are called ad events. Usually, each invoice that you receive will include charges for all ad events in a given period. However, sometimes ad events are not captured in real time and may be captured up to 48 hours later. This delay in capturing ad events could be due to several reasons such as poor mobile phone connection and system delays. The ad events that are recorded after an invoice has already been issued to you are charged on your next invoice.

If you notice overlapping dates on your invoices, please note that you are not being charged twice for the same ad events. The invoices have the same date due to a delay in capturing ad events.
